Peer Support Training Information
Peer support training programs equip individuals with lived experience in mental health or substance use recovery to provide non-clinical, strengths-based support to others. In California, approved programs typically offer 80 hours of training on 17 core competencies to prepare for the CalMHSA certification exam. Common providers include NAMI CA, Futuro Health, SCCC, and various community colleges.
Key Peer Support Training Programs & Providers
Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Training (80 Hours): Approved by CalMHSA, these programs are required for state certification.
NAMI CA: Offers comprehensive training focusing on recovery, trauma-informed care, and ethics.
Pacific Clinics: Provides a mix of self-paced modules and live Zoom sessions.
SCCC (Southern California Counseling Center): Focuses on behavioral health support, social justice, and peer values.

Program Details
Eligibility: Individuals must be 18+ and have lived experience with mental illness, substance use disorders, or as a family member.

Cost & Support: Scholarships are available through the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI).
